Times & Season 1842-1843 Newspaper Articles about
Archaeological Discoveries in Mesoamerica
<< Joseph Smith took charge as editor of "proof reading" the articles in the Times and Seasons between March 1, 1842 and November 15, 1842 when these articles were published concerning Mesoamerica being the location Book of Mormon events. (Where Was Joseph Smith between March 1, 1842 and Nov 15, 1842, by John L. Lund, PhD)
On June 25, 1842, Joseph Smith, referring to John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood publicaton of the book, Incidents of Travel in Yucatan, wrote in his personal journal the following:
"...Stephens and Catherwood have succeeded in collecting in the interior of America, [Mesoamerica], a large amount of relics of the Nephites, or the ancient inhabitants of America treated of in the Book of Mormon, which relics have recently been landed in New York." (Joseph Smith, History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 vols. [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1980], 5:44)
On October 1, 1842, Joseph Smith as editor of Times and Seasons news paper, published the following: "It will not be a bad plan to compare Mr. Stephens' ruined cities with those in the Book of Mormon: light cleaves to light, and facts are supported by facts. The truth injures no one." (Times & Seasons, Joseph Smith, editor, October 1, 1842)
On October 1, 1843, Joseph Smith as editor of Times and Seasons news paper, published the following: "Mr. Stevens published about two years ago...a work of great interest...its history unfolds the ruins of grandeur, civilizations and intelligence. ...corroborating, as it does the history of the Book of Mormon. There is no stronger circumstancial evidence of the authenticity of the latter book, [the Book of Mormon], can be given, than that contained in Mr. Stephens work." (Times & Seasons, Joseph Smith, Editor, October 1, 1843)
“Stephens and Catherwood’s researches in Central America, [Mesoamerica], abundantly testify of this thing. The stupendous ruins, the elegant sculpture, and magnificence of the ruins of Guatemala, and other cities, corroborate this statement, and show that a great and mighty people—men of great minds, clear intellect, bright genius, and comprehensive designs inhabited this continent. Their ruins speak of their greatness; the Book of Mormon unfolds their history." (Times & Seasons, Joseph Smith, Editor, July 18, 1842, American Antiquities)
“Facts are Stubborn Things."
“From an extract from 'Stephens' Incidents of Travel in Central America," it will be seen that the proof of the Nephites and Lamanites dwelling on this continent, according to the account in the Book of Mormon, is developing itself in a more satisfactory way than the most sanguine believer in that revelation, could have anticipated. It certainly affords us a gratification that the world of mankind does not enjoy, to give publicity to such important developments of the remain and ruins of those mighty people." (Times & Seasons, Joseph Smith Editor, Sept. 15, 1842)
