Scourged His Skin With Faggots?

"And it came to pass that they took him and bound him, [the Prophet Abinadi], and scourged his skin with faggots, yea, even unto death.  And now when the flames began to scorch him...."  (Mosiah 17:13-14)  148 B.C.

[Dictionary definition of the word "Faggot" is  "a bundle of sticks or twigs bound together as fuel."]

<< The Prophet Abinadi being Burned

This is a common representation of this event as recorded in the Book of Mormon.
This representation would also be a common understanding, of someone being burned, in the 1830's when the Book of Mormon was printed.
Why portray this way of burned, with the wood or sticks underneath the body?  The scriptures above do not say that the faggots were underneath or put at the feet of Abinadi.  We just think of it this way.

In the past sometimes wood logs were used for a fire.  But not always for example a faggot or bundle of sticks were sometimes used.

<<  In 16 October 1555, at Oxford, England, the English Bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were burnt at the stake for their refusal to recant their Protestant believes.  Note the faggots or bundles of sticks being used.
